SoftPerfect RAM File System is a high-performance, in-memory file system that stores files entirely in the computer memory. Unlike traditional RAM disks, which create a virtual block device and format it with NTFS or exFAT, RAM FS is a file system in its own right that lives directly in RAM. This removes a whole layer of overhead, making RAM FS faster than any physical SSD and faster than conventional RAM disks as well.
The most popular use is to move temporary files onto it. Operating system, web browsers and many other applications write temporary files constantly. Redirect those to a RAM FS volume - and everything that uses them will run faster, your SSD will be spared a great deal of writing, and the clutter of leftover temporary files won't touch your permanent drive. The result is higher performance, a longer life for your SSD, and less junk on the physical disk.
RAM FS also offers capabilities a block-based RAM disk cannot, including instant copies with reflinks that share memory until changed, transparent compression that fits more data into the same RAM, and persistence to an image file so a volume can survive a restart and mount again automatically at boot. Volumes appear as ordinary local drives with full OS security and can be resized live without dismounting.
